Wine Cellar Teneguía

Located at ‘Plazoleta García Escámez’, Bodegas Teneguía is one of the most representative wineries on the island and in the entire Canary Island archipelago. This winery produces wines under the ‘Teneguía’ label, and is a member of La Palma’s Designation of Origin (DO), the body that oversees the quality and production
process(es) of the local wine sector. In fact, Teneguía was the very first winery to adhere to the DO. This winery is also the oldest operating as a cooperative entity in La Palma; it has fulfilled this important function for as long as 65 years. Bodegas Teneguía produces wines with grapes delivered by its numerous members from most municipalities around the island. The winery produces
white wines of excellent quality. Teneguía’s
reds ‘Negramoll’, ‘2001’ and ‘Tinto Crianza’ have gained well-deserved recognition, as well as its rosé wines.

However, Malvasía is Teneguía’s ‘jewel’; this wine is made with grapes of the same varietal as its name (Malvasía). The grapes grow in vine stocks that often are over a century old, and that in most cases only produce a very limited amount of grapes. Malvasía vines and vineyards are mostly situated in a near-by area called ‘Los Llanos Negros’, at the foot of the San Antonio Volcano. Malvasía wines are naturally sweet. The uniqueness of these wines has been deservedly recognised nationally as well as internationally at many wine shows, where these wines have competed and received numerous awards. The special natural conditions, such as the volcanic soil, many hours of sun exposure and other climatic factors contribute to making Malvasía a true world-class delicacy and a pleasure for all senses.

The winery has a point of sales, where visitors can taste and purchase from a range of over 15 different wine labels produced at the premises. For all these reasons, a visit to Bodegas Teneguía is strongly recommended. The winery has a small ‘crianza’ or vintage space to age Malvasía wines that has been excavated under the ‘Tío Perico’ mountain, next to the winery.
