Llanos Negros Wine Growing Area

You are looking at Llanos Negros. This is the volcanic ash from the eruption of Volcano San Antonio, overlooking us, in 1677. This is the largest area of Malmsey grapevines in La Palma.

When the first European settlers arrived in the late 15th century, the first vines were planted in the soils of La Palma. The varieties planted at that time included some age-old
Malmsey root stock. Just two hundred years later, the exceptional quality of our wines had spread beyond our shores to be enjoyed in the Courts of Europe and in the Americas.

The trans-Atlantic trade routes came throughthe island, winning praise for our wines from Shakespeare, which shows just how popular they were in England. Some years later, in the 19th century, romantic poet Lord Byron would also refer to our vines as one of the nectars of the gods.

The Malmsey of La Palma is an exuberant, aromatic wine, made naturally from grapes that are allowed to over ripen on the vine. It is ideal for desserts and as an aperitif, although it can also be drunk on its own. Before leaving Fuencaliente, don’t forget to treat your palate to a glass of Malmsey.
