Apart from being arid, these lands are also exceptional for being the youngest in Spain, the result of the eruption of neighbouring Teneguía Volcano in 1971. The vines are protected by long dry-stone walls, known as “cadenas”, which shelter them from the almost constant battering of the Trade Winds.
Each row of vines has its own small defensive wall, bearing witness to the tough job of the local wine growers of Fuencaliente to change these volcanic wastelands into productive lands.
