The volcanic lands of Fuencaliente, many of which are covered by volcanic ash known locally as “picón”, are carpeted with vineyards. The vines are trained along the ground like creepers, weaving green carpets over the black soils. Most of the varieties grown are local varieties, including listán blanco, bujariego, sabro and gual, although there can be no doubt that the star variety is Malmsey.
The local wineries bear witness to the deep-rooted wine culture, so a visit to them will give you an insight into how they are made and give you the chance to taste our famous wines. The vineyard landscapes are unique, combining with volcanoes like San Antonio, where you can delight in Los Llanos Negros, slopes offering a striking contrast between the volcanic soil and the vines, or Las Machuqueras next to the young Teneguia Volcano, where the ingenuity of the locals has managed to “wall” the vines.
And don’t forget the saying:
He who came to Fuencaliente
And didn’t drink wine
Came for nothing.
