Wine Cellar Juan Matías Torres Pérez

Visiting Bodega Juan Matías Torres Pérez, located on ‘Calle Fuencaliente de Ciudad Real’ is by no means like visiting just ‘another’ winery.

Since 1885, this small family winery has been part of the history of several generations of grape growers and wine makers of the same family. Today, the winery is proudly operated by the fourth (father) and fifth (daughter) generations. With such a long tradition, and an inherited wine knowledge that is constantly updated, this family winery continues a concept based on the affective and experiential.

With its rustic interior, the winery’s building, developed in different phases and times in response to emerging needs, provides an environment and the opportunity to appreciate the chronology and evolution of local wine making traditions.

Craft of the wine; The winery is home to two ‘lagares de tea’ (wine presses made of local wood) that are still in use, and ‘antique’ oak and chestnut barrels that allow for a unique elaboration of the wines.

Experiences that begin in the soil. Bodega Juan Matías Torres’ grapes are cultivated in small land plots. The soils are of volcanic, barren, and therefore distinctive nature. The grapes are harvested from ancient, non-irrigated and traditionally grown vine stocks. The case of the Malvasía grape varietal is even more remarkable, growing in extreme soil conditions, with grapes harvested from century-old, still producing Malvasía vine stocks.

Artisan work, people, local island culture, the sea... These elements define the character of Bodega Juan Matías Torres, and the quantity of wines produced. In fact, the winery has a limited yearly production based on unique grape varietals. These varietals are included in La Palma’s Designation of Origin (DO), and are grown in a fragile and unique territory, now officially declared Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO.

From such a special environment, the resulting wines are characterised by their distinctiveness and depth. A ‘stand out’ is our naturally sweet Malvasía, a wine that today is renowned nationally as well as internationally.
